Missed Big Brother meetings must be rescheduled by the individual, Pledge or Big Brother, who missed them.
Big Brothers must report missed meetings to the Pledgemasters immediately.
Any Big Brother who does not report a missed meeting or who does not reschedule a meeting missed by their own fault shall be subject to a $10 fine.
Help Little Brothers procure difficult pages or signatures and obtain answers to Brothers’ questions.
In conflicts between Brothers and Little Brothers, talk to the offended or offending Brother and mediate if requested; otherwise, consult a Pledgemaster.
Participate actively in the development of the Pledge’s paddle.
Attend all Pledging events.
Attend the Pledging Committee report in General Meetings. Absences require a discussion with the Pledgemasters about the missed event and a written report on the Little Brother’s progress during that week.
Provide the first full portion of candy for each Little Brother. Candy is due to the Little Brother by Lock-In.
Receive the first choice of questions for the Little Brother at Roundtable during Informal Initiations.
Pledgemasters
Be the ultimate authority on all subjects regarding Pledging.
Make all necessary decisions concerning the Pledgeclass. All decisions are binding and final unless the Will of the Brotherhood prevails.
Preside at all official Pledge meetings
Set Pledge meeting times with deference to the Pledges.
Dispense all non-book information required of the Pledges.
Assign Big Brothers and inform the Vice President for the purposes of the Pinning Ceremony.
Contact Pledge Captains often to give examples of duties, pass on helpful hints, and encourage self-initiated Pledge meetings.
Act as a liaison between Brothers and Pledges.
Attempt to contact all Inactive Brothers who wish to participate in Pledging to inform them of changes in policy.
Arrange for appropriate listening sessions held by Brothers.
Bring Brothers Court charges against any Brother who consistently refuses to honor regulations involving Pledging, including, but not limited to, the National Constitution, National Policies, Alpha Chapter By-Laws, Alpha Chapter Policies, and Pledgemaster directives.
Pledge Materials
Pledge Pins
Pledge pins must be worn over the heart at all times except when engaged in any strenuous activity that may damage the pin.
Pins must be worn on the outer layer of clothing, excluding jackets and coats.
The loss of a pin shall result in a replacement fee of $8.00.
Pledge Books
Pledge Books shall be carried at all times during Pledging, except when Pledges are engaged in any strenuous activity which may damage them or when they are in the care-of a Brother.
If a Pledge leaves a Book unwatched, any Brother who finds it shall secure it in the MBΨ room. A Pledge whose Book is in the MBΨ room must correctly answer a question about music or the Fraternity to obtain the Book.
Books shall be small, memo notebooks with the letters MBΨ on the front.
Books shall have the Pledge’s name on the lower front cover.
Pledge Books shall contain the following, in order:
Big Brother pages;
Pledgemaster pages;
Active Brother pages;
Special Active Brother pages;
Alumni Active Brother pages;
Affiliate Brother pages;
Any Inactive Big Brother pages;
Inactive and Honorary Brother pages, if applicable;
Pledge Brother pages;
Big Brother Meeting verification;
Blue Chip Points page; and
Brownie Points pages;
Pertinent information to be obtained on the Big Brother, Pledgemaster, Active Brother, and any Inactive Big Brother pages by Pledges during First Period shall be, in order:
Name;
Up to five Nicknames;
Hometown;
Curriculum -and Classification;
University music ensembles for the current academic year;
Past ensembles, non-university ensembles or non-ensemble affiliations;
Up to five ensembles, current, past, or any combination thereof, may be listed
Elected Chapter Offices;
Appointed Chapter Offices;
Chapter Committee chairships;
Chapter Committee memberships;
National Offices;
Standing National Committee Memberships;
Up to five Romantic Attachments; and
Date.
Brothers may write on the back of their pages any time during First Period to request that Pledges get the pages of up to two (2) Alumni and/or Inactive Brothers.
Pledges may open their Pledgebooks but only in the presence of those associated with the Fraternity.
Pledges may not write in the “Pages and Points” section of their Pledge books under any circumstances.
Neither a Pledge nor a Brother may write on another’s page.
Blue Chip Points
Blue Chip Points shall be awarded for completing service activities.
Blue Chip Points shall be deducted the missed deadlines, missed meetings, and failure to attend service events.
The amount deducted shall be in increments of one (1) point.
During the first two weeks of pledging, Blue Chip Point penalties shall be assigned to Pledges individually.
After the first two weeks of pledging, Blue Chip Point penalties shall be assigned to the Pledgeclass as a whole.
Blue Chip Points can be awarded to a Pledge by a Musical Activities Coordinator or a Pledgemaster or any service activity.
Twenty (20) Blue Chip Points must be obtained by the end of Coda Week.
Brownie Points
Brownie Points may be awarded or subtracted by any Brother participating in the Pledging season.
Brownie Points shall be recorded on the pages at the back of the Pledge Book.
Entries shall include point values with limits of +/- 10 points during First Period and +/- 25 points during Second Period. Entry values may not exceed these limits.
Book Etiquette
Never confiscate a book unless it is found unguarded. If it is found unguarded, secure it in the Psi room and notify the Pledgemasters immediately and the Pledge as soon as possible.
Do not refuse a page meeting when properly asked, unless time forbids.
There are no reserved pages in a Pledge Book except for those of the Pledgemasters and the Pledge’s Big Brothers.
Do not change the information on your page at any time during Pledging without prior approval from the Pledgemasters. Questions may be added without Pledgemaster approval until after the first two weeks of pledging.
Refrain from questioning the reasoning of a Brother or Book entry in the presence of a Pledge.
Never remove a page from a Pledge book, excepting pre-dated Pledge pages and multiple copies of Pledge pages.
If it seems that a Brother has erred regarding a Book entry or a Pledge, take the problem directly and immediately to the Pledgemasters.
Do not undermine the intents of another Brother by trying to compensate with Brownie Points for a Book entry that does not make sense or seem fair.
Paddles
Paddles shall be distributed at the first pledge meeting and completed by the last pledge meeting.
Paddles shall be carried at all times during Coda Week except when Pledges are engaged in any strenuous activity which may damage them or when they are in the care of Brother.
Paddles, and all materials needed to make paddles, shall be provided by the Brotherhood.
Paddle design specifications are as follows:
Paddles shall be sanded by hand.
Paddles shall be coated in primer.
Paddles shall be coated in high-gloss white paint.
Paddles shall have a stripe of high gloss red paint two inches wide diagonal terminating at the base of the handle. This stripe shall go from “High-Left” to “Low-Right” when looking at the front of the paddle.
Paddles shall have the Fraternity Crest above the red stripe.
Paddles shall have the Greek letters MBΨ placed diagonally above the Fraternity Crest.
Each paddle shall have the Pledge’s name placed vertically down the handle.
Paddles shall have on the back the signatures of the Active and Special Active Brotherhood, all Inactive Big Brothers, five Inactive Brothers, five Honorary Brothers, the Chapter Advisor, and the Chapter Sweetheart.
The Pledgemasters shall give further paddle specifications and instructions.
Containers
Containers shall be constructed during the final five weeks of pledging and completed by the last pledge meeting before Coda Week.
Container designs shall be approved by the Pledgemasters before construction.
Pledgemaster approval shall be solicited at or before the fifth Pledge meeting.
Containers shall hold candy, provided by Big Brothers, for consumption by Brothers.
Containers should always be filled with candy unless Brothers have just removed a significant amount thereof.
Individuals not associated with the Fraternity are not entitled to touch a container, open a container, or consume candy held inside a container.
Containers shall be carried at all times during Coda Week, except when Pledges are engaged in any strenuous activity which may damage them or when they are in the care of a Brother.
Containers, and all materials needed to make containers, shall be provided by the Pledgeclass.
Containers shall be designed and constructed by Pledges without assistance from or consultation with any Brother besides the Pledgemasters.
Container design specifications shall be as follows:
Containers shall have visible the Greek letters MBΨ.
Each container shall have visible the Pledge’s name.
Containers shall have visible the Pledge Class Name.
Pledging Process
First Period
This Period shall consist of three (3) weeks.
The purpose of this Period is to develop the personal understanding and respect from which Brotherhood grows. Brothers should stress service and the bond which music serves to strengthen the Fraternity.
Pledges shall be treated as Brothers-in-training.
Pledges must use formal address with all Active, Special Active, and Alumni Active Brothers and all Big Brothers until the Brother in question approves informal address.
Formal address shall be defined as the title “Brother” followed by the Brother’s last name.
Informal address shall be approved no later than the successful return of the Brother’s pertinent information.
There shall be no harassment or extra tasks beyond normal efforts for the Fraternity.
Required pages must be obtained by the end of First Period, including:
Active Brother pages;
Special Active Brother pages;
Alumni Active Brother pages;
Affiliate Brother pages; and
Inactive Big Brother pages
Pledges must know and recite Active, Special Active, Alumni Active, Affiliate, and Inactive Big Brother pages categorically, in order from top to bottom, within two weeks of procuring each page. The date is not required information.
Second Period
This Period shall consist of five (5) weeks.
Pledges must know and be prepared to recite, in the order they appear in their book, Active, Special Active, Alumni Active, Affiliate, and Inactive Big Brother pages during Second Period.
Pledges are encouraged to get their Pledge Brother’s pages but will not be tested on them.
Good-natured pranking traditionally associated with Pledging shall be allowed, subject to the approval of the Pledgeclass or a majority of the membership thereof, pursuant to 3.4. of this Policy
Listening Sessions
Over one-half of the Pledgeclass must be present at all listening sessions. Those Pledges not present are responsible for the material.
Four listening sessions are required in the Pledging season, one of which must be Campus Tour.
Content must be related to music or to the Fraternity.
Pranking
The rules of North Carolina State University and all federal state and local laws shall be honored in pranking.
The name Mu Beta Psi and any Greek letters shall not be used in or related to pranking.
Pranking shall be allowed only during Second Period subject to the approval of the Pledgeclass or a majority of the membership thereof.
Pledges may not prank other Pledges
Brothers may not prank other Brothers during the Pledging season
Pranking must be practical joke oriented
Pranked items must be the property of the subject being pranked
Pranked items must be- returned upon request of the subject being pranked.
Pranking which might hinder normal and safe operation of a vehicle is not allowed.
Pranked items may not be damaged in any way.
Discretion in pranking should be used at all times considering both the temporary and permanent consequences of actions.
No pranking that one would not accept in return is allowed.
Brothers and Pledges shall strictly follow off-limits lists. The following items are always off-limits:
Electronic equipment;
Animals;
Books;
Book bags;
School supplies;
School property;
Music;
Musical instruments;
Anything bearing or intended to bear Greek letters; and
The Psi Room
Coda Week
Coda Week is the last week of Pledging, starting at 12:00 PM on Saturday and ending at 12:00 PM on the following Saturday.
Formal address should be used with all Active, Special Active, and Alumni Active Brothers and all Big Brothers until after a Paddle Signature meeting with the Brother in question. Formal address shall be defined as the title Brother followed by the Brother’s last name.
Pledges and Brothers should dress formally whenever Paddle Signatures are solicited.
The paddle and container shall be carried at all times unless in the care of a Brother.
Big Brothers shall provide their Little Brother with candy by Lock-In. Late or no candy shall result in a fine of $10.
All unguarded paddles and containers shall be secured by the Brotherhood.
All required paddle signatures must be procured by the end of Coda Week.
Required paddle signatures are:
All Active, Special Active, Alumni Active, and Affiliate Brothers;
All Big Brothers;
Five Inactive Brothers;
Five Honorary Brothers;
All Alpha Chapter Advisors; and
The Alpha Chapter Sweetheart.
Paddle signature meetings shall consist of actions and conversation regarding Pledging and the Brotherhood
Dues
Pledge Dues are defined by the materials needed for the duration of pledging, including Pledgebook, paddle, and national fees.
Pledges are solely responsible for the full amount of the set dues.
Pledges should consult with the Pledgemasters if a payment plan is necessary or desired.
Pledges are responsible for compensation of any materials used for each completed week of the pledging season.
All dues must be paid by 12:00 PM on the last day of Coda Week.
The ultimate authority regarding the payment method of pledge dues resides with the Pledgemasters.
Dues shall be decided by the Pledgemasters and approved by the Active and Special Active Brotherhood prior to the beginning of the pledging season.
Disciplinary Procedures
Votes of Discontent
Any Active, Special Active, or Alumni Active Brother or any Big Brother can call a Vote of Discontent at any time during Pledging, excluding Coda Week, if that Brother feels that a Pledge’s progress is unsatisfactory.
Refer to Article V, Section 6 of the Alpha Chapter By-Laws for voting procedures.
Depledging
A Pledge must contact a Pledgemaster before they may choose to depledge.
A Pledge may only be asked or required to depledge as a direct result of a vote, pursuant to Article VI, Section 6 of the Alpha Chapter By-Laws.
Upon depledging, a Pledge must return all Fraternity property directly to the Pledgemasters. The Pledge is not considered to have depledged until all materials are returned.
A Pledge who has depledged is ineligible to become a Pledge again within the same Pledging season.
The status of any Pledge as having or not having depledged ultimately resides with the Pledgemasters.
Policy Infractions
The Pledgemasters are the final authority in all matters concerning pledging.
The Pledgemasters shall take appropriate action against any Brother who disregards policy.
Brothers who continue to disregard policy shall not be allowed at Pledging events.
The authority to decide that a Brother is not allowed at Pledging events resides with the Pledgemasters.
The Pledgemasters shall inform the Active Brotherhood and the Brother in question of any decision that a Brother is not allowed at Pledging events.
Brothers whom the Pledgemasters feel to be a concern or potential impedance to the Pledging process may be given a warning, or put on probation or suspension at the discretion of the Pledgemasters.
The Pledgemasters must notify a Brother of a warning, or of being put on probation or suspension of this fact in person.
If in person notification is not feasible, the Pledgemasters may notify a Brother of a warning, probation, or suspension of this fact via telephone, e-mail, voice mail, or written correspondence.
Notification of a Brother being placed on probation or suspension of this fact by any means other than real-time interaction must be made twenty-four hours before probationary or suspension status takes effect for the Brother in question.
Warning
A warning may be given to a Brother on the basis of a quandary brought to the Pledgemasters involving said Brother.
The Brother in question must meet with the Pledgemasters to discuss the matter within forty-eight hours of the issue arising.
A warning serves for situations that are of minor impedance to the Pledging process and can be further avoided after the discussion with the Pledgemasters.
A warning may be given to a Brother until the Pledgemasters have further information to warrant the potential of being placed on probation or suspension.
A warning may be bypassed granted the severity of the problem and is not required before probation or suspension occurs.
The Pledgemasters have the authority to take the appropriate action if a warning must be bypassed.
If a warning is not sufficient in resolving the conflict, probation or suspension may occur.
Probation
Probationary status shall be defined as the Brother in question having limited involvement in the Pledging process.
The Brother in question shall be limited to group pledging events and make no initial contact with pledges.
Pledges may in turn make initial contact with the Brother in question at their own will.
Page meetings and paddle signature solicitation must be approved by the Pledgemasters prior to occurring.
Violation of the limitations may result in suspension.
The Pledgemasters must notify the Active Brotherhood of a Brother placed on probation when probationary status takes effect for the Brother in question.
Should a Brother placed on probation take any action deemed by the Pledgemasters or by the Will of the Brotherhood to be damaging or impeding to the Pledging process, that Brother shall not be allowed at Pledging events.
The Pledgemasters shall inform the Active Brotherhood and the Brother in question of any decision that a Brother is not allowed at Pledging events.
This decision may be overruled by the Will of the Brotherhood.
Probationary status expires for any Brother at the end of the Pledging season, or upon notification of the Brother in question and the Active Brotherhood by the Pledgemasters that probationary status for that Brother has been removed.
Probationary status for any Brother may be overruled by the Will of the Brotherhood.
Suspension
Suspension constitutes being removed from the Pledging process completely based on either violating probationary status or impeding the Pledging process to the utmost severity at the discretion of the Pledgemasters.
No contact may be made with pledges, page meeting and paddle signatures may not be solicited from the Brother in question unless a Pledge asks and is approved by the Pledgemasters.
The Brother in question shall not be allowed at any event pertaining to the Pledging season, including group events.
Violation of suspension guidelines will result in automatic Brother’s Court charges.
The Pledgemasters must notify the Active Brotherhood of a Brother placed on suspension when suspension status takes effect for the Brother in question.
Suspension status expires for any Brother at the end of the Pledging season, or upon notification of the Brother in question and the Active Brotherhood by the Pledgemasters that suspension status for that Brother has been removed.
Suspension status for any Brother may be overruled by the Will of the Brotherhood.
Invitations
Candidates
Any person who filled out a “Pledge Interest Form” or was nominated on a “Pledge Nomination Form” by the beginning of the Invitations meeting shall be considered a Candidate for pledging.
Further candidates not meeting criteria outlined in V.A.1, may be approved by the Will of the Brotherhood.
Discussion
All Candidates will be discussed in the same manner.
The Candidate’s identity will be confirmed.
The Candidate’s “Cons” will be discussed.
The Candidate’s “Pros” will be discussed.
Any Brother may participate in the discussion of a Candidate.
Voting
After each Candidate is discussed, there will be a vote on the Candidate.
Any Candidate that passes the vote will receive an invitation to Pledge.
In order for a Brother to vote on any candidate, they must be present for the entirety of the Invitations meeting.
Attendance
Pledging Committee
Up to two (2) unexcused absences are allowed
Attendance shall be excused by the chair of the Pledging Committee, if they deem the excuse to be valid
Each additional unexcused absence after two (2) unexcused absences will result in a fine of $10.00, payable to Alpha Chapter, to be collected by the Alpha Treasurer.
Rush
Active Brothers must attend at least three (3) days of Rush.
Special Active Brothers must attend at least two (2) days of Rush.
Alumni Active Brothers must attend at least two (2) day of Rush.
Affiliate Brothers must attend at least one (1) day of Rush
Brothers must meet these attendance requirements excepting a valid excuse given to the Pledgemasters at least 48 hours in advance.
Brothers failing to meet these attendance requirements are taken out of consideration to be a Big Brother and are subjected to a $10.00 fine.
Amendments
Any amendment to this Policy before the beginning of the Pledging season is subject to the approval of two-thirds (2/3) of the Active Brotherhood.
Any amendment to this Policy after the beginning of the Pledging season is subject to the approval of three-fourths (3/4) of the Active Brotherhood.
If any change to this Policy is effected during the Pledging season, the changed portions of Policy can only be utilized if they affect elements of the Pledging season that have not yet taken place.
