Member Education Policy

Article I - Definitions

Section 1. Definitions

  1. Brothers: all initiated members are referred to as this.
  2. Hazing: any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of their willingness to participate, and which is not related to the acceptable published mission of Mu Beta Psi.
  3. Bids: an invitation to become a Member-in-Training, good for one term.
  4. Member Education Process: The process to become a Brother.
  5. Big Brothers (Bigs): Big Brothers are guides to specific Members-in-Training.
  6. Members-in-Training (Littles): incoming members are referred to as this. They may also be referred to as incoming members or littles, never as Brothers.
  7. Member Education Staff: Those primarily responsible for educating Members-in-Training. Made up of the Member Educator (ME) and Assistant Member Educator (AME).
  8. Initiation: the final portion of the member education process after which Members-in-Training will be considered Brothers. This is broken up into a local, informal and national, formal portion.
  9. Member-In-Training Dues: fees associated with the member education process to be paid after initiations.

Article II - Concern Reporting

Section 1. Hazing

  1. Mu Beta Psi - Zeta chapter, is a non hazing entity at Michigan Technological University.

Section 2. Concerns

  1. Mu Beta Psi - Zeta Chapter holds the physical and mental safety as the top priority for our Members-in-Training and Brothers.
  2. All concerns should be immediately brought to the attention of the Member Educator.
    1. If Members-in-Training or Brothers feel uncomfortable reporting to the Member Educator, they should report to the Assistant Member Educator or any other Brother that they feel comfortable talking to.
  3. All concerns will be taken seriously.
    1. If necessary, the case will be investigated by the Standard’s Board and reported to the National Vice President of Chapter Maintenance.

Section 3. Stop Work Authority

  1. Members-in-Training maintain Stop Work Authority, the ability for any individual to stop current actions if the situation causes potential concern without repercussion.
  2. If an incident occurs, follow the ‘stop, contain, manage, and mitigate’ process.
    1. Stop the current action by informing the Brotherhood.
    2. Contain the issue. Explain what is the issue and why.
    3. Manage the issue so that there is a plan to resolve the situation.
    4. Mitigate the issue so that it does not occur again.

Article III - Expectations

Section 1. Expectations of Members-in-Training

  1. Requirements to complete the Member Education Process:
    1. Must be in good academic standing at Michigan Technological University.
    2. Maintain a guidebook given to them by Member Education Staff that contains the information they have received pertaining to the Member Education Process.
      1. Include the governing documents as follows:
        1. National Constitution
        2. Zeta Chapter Bylaws
        3. Risk Management Policy
        4. National Code of Conduct
    3. Attend all general meetings during their Member Education Term, and all weekly class meetings.
      1. Excused absences can be granted with prior notice or in extenuating circumstances.
    4. Attend a study session each week of information in the Member Education Term.
      1. Study sessions will be no longer than 2 hours and planned around the involved members’ schedules.
      2. Study sessions will begin no later than 11:59 pm.
    5. Interview each active Brother.
      1. Should be completed before final initiations.
    6. Complete an amount of service hours, set each semester at the discretion of ME staff.
      1. Can be earned by participating in service, concession, or philanthropy events.
    7. Complete weekly quizzes.
      1. Earn above 70% on the quizzes and must be retaken until successful.
      2. Failure due to extenuating circumstances will not be held against Members-in-Training.
    8. Make plaques.
      1. One individual plaque for each Member-in-Training, to be given to their Big Brother.
    9. Attend local and national initiations.
      1. Initiations will go no later than 11:59 pm.
  2. Encouraged activities for the Member Education Process:
    1. Interview Zeta inactives, alumni, and advisors
    2. Complete a Second Signature event with each active Brother
      1. Several Second Signature events can happen at one event as long as there is a 1:1 ratio of Members-in-Training to active Brothers.

Section 2. Expectations of Member Education Staff

  1. Explain the joining process as the Members-in-Training proceed through the joining process.
  2. Member Education Staff are responsible for providing a list of Bigs to the Members-in-Training.
    1. This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the Member Education staff with the support of the Brotherhood.
  3. Get guidebooks for each Member-in-Training and print pages for the guidebook.
  4. Plan and attend weekly Member-in-Training class meetings.
  5. Plan and run initiation events.
  6. Keep the Brotherhood updated with the Members-in-Training’s progress.
  7. Plan study sessions.
  8. Grade weekly quizzes.
  9. If there are problems with the Members-In-Training's processes, help them or encourage the Bigs to help them or talk to VP.
  10. Unless extenuating circumstances permit otherwise, the following requirements must be met for those brothers that are Member Education Staff:
    1. Must be in good academic standing at Michigan Technological University.

Section 3. Expectations of Big Brothers

  1. Must have been an Active Brother during a previous Member Education Term.
  2. Must be chosen by a Member-in-Training (the Little) to be their Big Brother.
  3. Unless extenuating circumstances permit otherwise, the following requirements must be met for a Brother to be eligible as a Big Brother for the semester:
    1. Must be in good academic standing at Michigan Technological University.
    2. Cannot be the Member Educator or Assistant Member Educator.

Section 4. Expectations of Brothers

  1. Be respectful of Members-in-Training.
  2. Follow all current Member Education Process practices.
